about
This composition is based on a previous attempt I made of writing a piece of music from a literary text. As I started manually manipulating the recording of my recitation of a poem that I had personal connection with, I realised I wasn't able to tear the voice sounds into fragments as I originally intended to, resisted by a strange but profound impression that I was somehow 'disrespecting' the original text. This experience later became the ground of the fundamental idea of '2 recitations of the same text', where the first recitation remains 'loyal' to the original text by American poet John Berryman, whereas the second recitation is artificially manipulated in a radical manner. The structure of this composition is inspired by an avant-garde film from Thailand, 'Tropical Malady', filmed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
